Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion & Equity

Diversity Statement

The Department of Neurobiology and Behavior (NBB) is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive community. The pursuit of knowledge thrives best in a community that encourages a diversity of opinions and experiences. We recognize the necessity to combat and overcome the consequences of centuries of systemic discrimination, which have had a strong negative impact on underrepresented minorities and other disadvantaged individuals, including LGBTQIA, individuals with disabilities, and DACA students. This discrimination has occurred broadly, including in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We are committed to proactively enhancing the representation of disadvantaged groups, first-generation students, and women in our graduate program and on our faculty, and to help train the next generation of leaders and role models in neuroscience and behavior. We are equally committed to providing a safe, productive, and diverse environment for all in our department. To achieve these goals, we must actively listen to and interact with underrepresented members of our community and others that are affected by our work, hold ourselves accountable in upholding our aims, and understand that it is our responsibility to demonstrate our commitment through proactive measures and regular self-assessment of our progress. We understand that we have much work to do, but the positive change we strive for is worth our strongest efforts.
