Research

I study the evolution and ecology of plant and invertebrate signals in several systems.

Orchids:

Australia's sexually deceptive Cryptostylis Tongue Orchids lure pollinators by mimicking the signals of female insects. Male insects are convinced into mating with orchid flowers and they unwittingly collect & distribute the orchid pollinia (see pollination in action via YouTube). Cryptostylis orchids are so persuasive that pollinators ejaculate and waste copious sperm on the flowers (media stories, publication in Am. Nat.). I've used Cryptostylis to research the evolution of deception, mimicry, and signalling in multiple sensory modes.

Trillium:

Unlike deceptive orchids, U.S. Trillium species provide their pollinators with a nectar reward. I'll be studying the signals and insects involved in Trillium pollination for the next few years in collaboration with Rob Raguso, Michelle Zjhra and Amy Boyd.

Spiders:

I'm also interested in spider sex pheromones & mating systems. Contact me for my review, or see below for the details.
