The small cells in ELa, carrying Knollenorgan electroreceptor information project to the immediately adjacent ELp. The cells in ELp are large and covered with spiny dendrites. Each cell is known to receive inputs from many small cells distributed over a large area of ELa.
Cells in ELp are known to be "tuned" to the duration of the EOD stimulus, and are thought to play an important role in EOD recognition.
This structure is recognizible as a distinct nucleus from ELa on the basis of hisological and histochemical assays.
