Research Interests

Our research deals primarily with the chemical interactions of organisms. Insects are our "beasts of choice", and we have been primarily concerned with their chemical language, with the substances they employ to protect themselves against enemies, and with the chemical bases of their interactions with plants. We have been dealing with the isolation and identification of substances that are biologically meaningful to these animals, as well as with the biochemical processes by which the chemicals are produced and with the ways in which the substances function. Much of our work is carried out in the field, both in the Ithaca area and in the South and Southwest.
